The natural, cultural, economic and social values of Queensland's coastline is highly significant, yet the management and planning for it's future is limited by existing institutional frameworks.
Background
In recognition of the needs of coastal managers in Queensland, members of the Queensland Coast and Marine NRM Network, EPA and Queensland Coastal Councils Group met in 2006 to discuss the need for a State Coastal Conference to overcome issues such as communciation and collaboration. It was decided that a Conference would be held biannually with attendance invited from all relevant coastal management stakeholders including representatives from Australian Government, State Agencies, Local Government, NRM Bodies, community groups, researchers, and Traditional Owners.
A committee was formed to support the Inaugural Queensland Coastal Conference which was held in Bundaberg in September 2007 and hosted by the Burnett Mary Regional Group. Event organisers, ICE Australia, provided their services and expertise towards the conference, 'Shifting Sands'.
Following on from the successes of 'Shifting Sands', the conference committee reformed with additional members and affiliate members to organise the 2009 conference, hosted by SEQ Catchments. The services of ICE Australia were retained as conference organisers with 'Waves of Change' held in May 2009 on the Gold Coast.
Planning for the 2011 conference is currently underway with the host organisation Girringun Aboriginal Corporation.
